Area profile: Woodside, Lobethal, Balhannah/Oakbank
With so many special towns in the Adelaide Hills, it’s hard to know which area is best for you – whether that’s to live or visit for the day.
While there’s plenty to keep you busy in each individual town, our region can be thought of in terms of its cluster of suburbs. E.g. Mount Barker, Littlehampton and Nairne.
These clusters tend to have their own vibe, pace, and personality. ‘Woodside, Lobethal and Balhannah/Oakbank’ is a good example.
Woodside
Woodside is about 15 minutes from Mount Barker, shouldered between Balhannah and Lobethal. It’s got a cute main street and is popular for weekend sports, with various clubs and courts.
The median house price as of November 2025 is $842,500. It’s growing at a slower rate compared to its neighbours – up 2.7% in the past year vs. Littlehampton’s record-breaking 26.2%.
As of 2024, its estimated population was 2,834.

Lobethal
Lobethal is about seven minutes from Woodside. It’s a town that’s growing in popularity in recent years. It’s home to the famous Lobethal Lights, popular wineries, breweries, and trendy eateries.
As of November 2025, its median house price is $700,000, with a 5.3% annual growth. Lobethal’s population is slightly smaller than Woodside at 2,174.

Balhannah/Oakbank
While technically two separate towns, they’re less than two kilometres away. Balhannah and Oakbank are less than 10 minutes from Hahndorf and the freeway, making them good towns with easy city access.
Oakbank has the annual Oakbank Races. There’s some cool, old school pubs in this area.
As of November 2025, Balhannah’s median house price is $835,250, with 4.4% annual growth. The estimated population of Balhannah, Oakbank and Verdun is 2,957.
